Notice to Authors: 'D Publishing'
The ASA has serious concerns with the publishing agreement produced by Dymocks' new venture, D Publishing. We have expressed our concerns to the company and requested a meeting, which has been agreed to. D Publishing have meanwhile stated they will be revising their current agreement and we will report on progress at a later date. For ASA members or other authors seeking information on the objections to this point, please see the following links: Australian Literature Review, Bookseller+Publisher and Megan Burke.

New ASA Paper:
The Author as Producer, the Author as Business
Aside from a limited number of high profile authors drawing substantial advances and royalties, the bulk of the intellectual property that makes up the Australian component of local publishing (and thus a significant part of the revenue), is delivered by many thousands of ordinary ‘working authors’. These authors are paid far less per annum than the few high flyers and most have to perform other paid work to supplement their income. Download the paper (free PDF) here.

2012 Children's Picture Book Illustrators' Initiative

Warning: Rights Harvesting Does Not Equal Effective Publication
The ASA has been alerted to a growing number of 'digital deals' being offered to Australian authors for their out-of-print, print format titles. Some publishers are offering '50% of net receipts' for e-book and print-on-demand editions, where authors are prepared to sign new agreements for these old books. Read the full article here...

Literary Agency Terms
New forms of ebook and internet-delivered publication appear each day, but some of the old issues for authors nevertheless remain. Judging from phone calls and email received at the ASA, there appears to be a small surge in start-up outfits arriving on the margins of established agenting, editing and publishing activity. Read the full article here...
