The Australia Council’s Emerging Writers/ Illustrators’ Initiative 2010

Applications closed on Monday, 17 May 2010. Acknowledgements will be sent the week beginning Monday, 19 July 2010. Results will be announced in September 2010.
The Emerging Writers/Illustrators’ Initiative 2010 provides project grants to Australian writers and picture book illustrators to assist in the creation of new work.
Grants may only be used for living expenses (including childcare) and/or to assist with project-related travel and research costs.
Writers and illustrators who have published a full-length literary work for adults should apply to the Literature Board of the Australia Council for a New Work grant in the Developing or Established category. The Literature Board defines full-length literary works for adults as:
• Fiction and literary non-fiction of 30,000 words and over
• Poetry collections of a minimum of 36 pages
• Theatre scripts of a minimum of 50 minutes
• Radio scripts of a minimum of 25 minutes
• New media works that display a significant literary component.
Writers/illustrators of children’s and young adult literature should apply to the Literature Board if they have published:
• at least three literary works under 20,000 or
• at least one literary works of over 20,000 words
• at least three picture books.

Emerging writers/illustrators can apply to the Australian Society of Authors for grants of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000.
Projects must start on or after 1 November 2010.

Important! If you apply as an Emerging writer/illustrator when you meet the criteria to apply in the Literature Board’s Developing or Established categories, your application will be ineligible and cannot be transferred to the Literature Board.
Note: You are not eligible to apply for an Emerging Writers/Illustrators' Initiative 2010 grant if you successfully applied for an Emerging Writers/Illustrators’ Initiative grant or New Work residency in 2009, or if you have outstanding an Australia Council acquittal.
