Advocacy and public policy

As the primary advocates for Australian literary creators, the ASA works to:

  • Set standard rates of pay for authors and illustrators for book publishing, freelance writing, anthologies, online use, book illustration, comics and graphic novels, public appearances, judging, travel /expenses and superannuation
  • Lobby governments at all levels to promote authors’ and illustrators’ professional interests
  • Represent our members on policy-making bodies, as well as copyright, collecting and lending rights bodies
  • Campaign with arts organisations, booksellers, publishers, writers’ centres and literary agents to advance authors’ interests
  • Negotiate standard contracts with publishers to improve conditions and outcomes for authors
  • Maintain a trust fund for legal action to advance and defend the rights of copyright holders
  • Conduct and contribute to research on issues concerning Australian literary creators.
