Digital Lending Right
The ASA continues to campaign to the Federal government for the introduction of Digital Lending Right for ebooks. Currently the Federal government makes annual payments to Australian creators and publishers whose books are held in public and educational lending libraries. Yet no such scheme is available for Australian ebooks, despite the fact that their uptake is on the rise.
All major political parties have made an in-principle commitment to introduce a Digital Lending Right scheme. The ASA hopes this will be fulfilled in the near future.
The ASA successfully campaigned for Public Lending Right (PLR) in 1975 and Educational Lending Right (ELR) in 2000. The PLR scheme makes payments to eligible Australian creators and publishers whose books are held in public lending libraries. The ELR scheme makes similar payments for books held in educational libraries.
