This course will guide participants through the process of creating a comic book or graphic novel from story development and scripting to assembling a creative team, art production, pitching to publishers, self publishing, distribution and marketing. This course is theory only.

Participants will gain an understanding of the end-to-end comics creation and production process and the workings of the Australian pop culture scene. They will learn how to manage relationships with artists, designers, printers, editors and other key parties involved in the successful publication of a comic book or graphic novel.

About the presenter

Julie Ditrich is a published comics writer, as well as a book project management and publishing consultant. Julie has a BA in Professional Writing (University of Canberra), and has worked in mainstream publishing as a bookseller, publicist, marketing manager, editor and author. Concurrently, Julie contributed to theOblagon comics anthology for Kaleidoscope (Australia) and, worked as a co-writer on the ElfQuest: WaveDancers comic book series for Warp Graphics (USA) and the Dart comic book miniseries for Image Comics (USA), which resulted in sales of over 270,000 comics all over the world. 
 
Julie was the co-founder and co-portfolio holder of the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) Comics / Graphic Novels Portfolio from 2007 and 2012, and also consulted with the Australian Cartoonists’ Association on the new Comic Book Artist Category which was introduced into the Stanley Awards from 2010. Most recently, she contributed to the Supanova Tides of Hope anthology. She is a partner of Black Mermaid Productions (BMP), a creative team and publisher that focuses on mermaid stories, and recently launched the Elf~Fin: Hyfus & Tilaweed comic book series, which has a readership all over the world. In September 2013, she also launched the Comics Masterclass professional development service for Australian comikers.
